Yoplait Custard Style Thick and Creamy Lowfat Yogurt

Yoplait Thick and Creamy I have strong preferences for how like my yogurt, because I eat them quite often. I like mine fat free (or low fat), low in sugar - although I would rather have a little more sugar than having them replaced with Splenda because I think it leaves a terrible aftertaste (in yogurts), and I like fruit pieces more than I like blended yogurt.

Although I have developed these strong tendencies, I must say that I didn't too much mind the lack of fruit pieces in the Yoplait Custard Style yogurt because it was so thick and creamy. I had the vanilla and strawberry flavors. They were thick, sweet and tasted great. I preferred the vanilla actually, which is very odd, since I never choose vanilla anything - a bit too plain for me. With the strawberry, at first I had a sense that they only added some strawberry essence, but after about 3 spoonfuls, I started to get that fruity strawberry taste. I still would have liked to actually see some hint of strawberries though.

In the Sept 05 Nutrition Action Newsletter [link] they used the following criteria to judge the best yogurts nutritionally: A 6 oz. yogurt needs at least 20 percent of a day's calcium and no more than 180 calories, 1.5 grams of saturated fat, and 30 grams of sugar. I decided to see how the Yoplait Low fat Thick and Creamy yogurt would stack up using those suggestion. One 6 ounce serving has 190 calories (uh-oh), 3.5 grams of total fat which is 5% of the daily value, 2 grams of saturated fat, which is 10% of the daily value (another uh-oh), 28 grams of sugars and 30% calcium. In addition, there are 7 grams of protein,15- 20% vitamin A, D and phosphorous. This yogurt also used HFCS, if you are concerned about that.

Here's a tip: Get 2/3 the calories and sugar grams by buying 4 ounces of yogurt instead of 6. One 6 ounce container of the Yoplait Custard Style yogurt costs $0.50 which is average. I liked the taste and the thick consistency, but nutritionally, I'm not too thrilled with it. I normally don't buy the lager 6 ounce containers of yogurt, and instead I get the 6 (or 4) pack of the 4 ounce size. Once you get used to the smaller size, it really doesn't make that much of a difference. But in this case, even at 4 ounces, that would amount to 127 calories (saving 63) and 19 grams of sugars. The sugars are higher than Yoplait Light but not much more than Dannon Activia.
